Our Climate

Chateau Mareuil is situated in the Vienne region of the Poitou Charentes, a beautiful part of France just south of the Loire Valley and north of the Dordogne. The climate is "Mediterranean", long hot Summers and very short sharp cold Winters. We have known the temperature in August to hover around 36 degrees. Set in beautiful gardens, each season brings forth something lovely to look at and eat!

Other things to see and do

The Chateau is set high and built upon a rock with lovely views over the surrounding countryside and our own private river.

We are surrounded by pretty villages and there are several lakes for swimming and water sports within a short distance. There are beautiful chateaux to see and visit at Bourg Archambault, Azay Le Ferron and Lignac (Chateau Guillaume). We can highly recommend the Michelin acclaimed restaurant "Les Orangeries" at Lussac les Chateaux and "Lucullus" at the Hotel de France in Montmorillon.

Oradour sur Glane

The site of an infamous massacre by SS troops in June 1944.  The village is a preserved martyr site unchanged since the 1944 atrocities. There is an excellent visitor’s centre, though familiarity with French is required to get the most from it. Visitors then can walk through the remains of the village and to the cemetery where many of the victims are buried and all the victims are remembered. The tributes by surviving family members to individual victims are particularly poignant
